When Karina Halle said this was the darkest book she has ever written she wasn't joking!! Kidnapping, interrogation, torture, drugs, murder, rape, the taking off of body parts... yeah, it was intense. Ms. Halle went to dark places in this world of Mexican drug cartels and I will never again question why she took a time out and explored contemporary romance for a while. Dark is definitely where her true talent lies but Ms. Halle can't live there and after reading this I would never ask her to.Dirty Promises was freakin' amazing. I could not wait to get back to this book every time I had to put it down. This was the violent, sorrowful, vengeful, but epic fight for power that the books in the Dirty Angels Trilogy have been individually leading up to. The fact that I loved this book in particular so much made me feel just as dirty and bloodstained as these characters. If you enjoy Karina Halle's writing, specifically her darker writing, you seriously need to get on this trilogy. Now!

My entire last week has been consumed reading all 7 books in this entire series and, honestly, I don't know when I'll ever read something this damn good again. I haven't yet, and I've read thousands of books and trilogies and series.
I was really hesitant to read Dirty Deeds and Dirty Promises after reading the reviews for them because Dirty Angels is my absolute favorite of the entire bunch, and I loved, loved, loved Javier in that story. I loved him in every book, but he really shined here. I liked how it began, I liked the plot, and I loved how Javier and Luisa came together. Their story was incredibly heartwarming and heartbreaking, and I was very happy with how it ended. I just sort of wanted to leave it at that. But then, because I was so addicted to Javier, I wanted to keep reading him, but the reviews for the last 2 books sort of indicated that things were going to get really dicey for them...which kind of sounded like their HEA was going to turn into a big hot mess. I read Dirty Deeds but i did not review that book because, to be honest, I was sort of speed reading through it because while I knew it was more or less Alana's story (Javier's sister), I knew it was setting up Dirty Promises somehow...and it definitely does...
Then I dove into Dirty Promises and, yes, Javier and Luisa dominated the book (Yay!) again. Even though I was reluctant to read it, only because of all the reviews that claimed it was a 'brutal' read, frankly, I was not floored by those brutal scenes because I had already read several others in the previous books. I mean, Javier is a Mexican drug lord...it can't be all butterflies and roses. And even though Javier can be a real prick sometimes, the author still makes you love him. Weird, but true. Not to say that this isn't a gritty read, because it is. It has the more violence (in my opinion) than any of the previous 6 books...and I have to say while there are a lot of scenes that had me on the edge of my seat, the scene in the bedroom with Javier, Luisa and Esteban blew me away. Holy Crap, I did not see that coming. And I felt like I was right there in the room with them, and I had to put my kindle down and take a breather about 5 times just to get the wild banging of my heart to calm down before I could read a few more paragraphs...That scene totally surprised me, I never thought anything like THAT would happen, and I could hardly read my way through it, scared witless about what the hell Javier was going to say or do next...
All in all, this was another spectacular read in Javier's story...I was not disappointed, and I am happy I read it. He has the fight of his life in this book (which is also another reason I almost passed on it). I did not want to see him lose everything but then I got to thinking, he's not a schmuck. And as he says in the book, during one of his inner dialogue POV's, 'I'm not stupid'...He is dark, he is passionate, he is shrewd and he is sexy as hell, and when he wants us all to believe he has no soul, he absolutely does have one of those too. But to get the real feel for him, and to really understand him, you really need to read all 7 books in this series. And, a footnote,..at the very end of this book, I learned, from the author herself, that we have not seen the last of Javier Bernal...He will be back (hopefully soon) and I cannot wait to read more about his life.
MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS - I'm torn, I should be giving this book a lower review because it contains issues that I hate, it made my stomach sick at times, it definitely broke my heart for a couple who are seriously damaged but belong together & keep making mistakes taking them further away from each other. So ok, the five star review is for all the feelings this book created inside me, an unforgettable series, and a man who I love to hate & keep rooting for since Sins & Needles. Javier has always been deadly & dangerous but now that his sister has been murdered he is inhumane, unpredictable, he loves Luisa more than ever but the overwhelming violence inside him has him pushing her away in order to take out his sexual explorations on others - broke my heart. ( Luisa, in her suffering & brokenheartedness, turns to Estaban, Javier's right hand man, an ambitious backstabbing disgusting human being who preys on her loneliness. There are so many shockingly violent parts to this book that I said WTH!!! about a thousand times. And Luisa's rejection by Javier jumps off the page & ripped my heart apart. The drug cartel is coming to a head, Javier is extremely on edge & needs Luisa even though he pushes her away, and poor Luisa is used as a pawn & left broken & battered & tossed aside to die. So how do Javier & Luisa find a way past their broken marriage & unfaithfulness & get their lives back? The ending saved the book for me, tipped the violence way over the top but this was the only way for these two to rise to the King and Queen of the cartel and heal and start over with a fresh start. Seriously, this book is cruel to read, I definitely have to focus on some light fluffy romance next!!
